Editorial: Effect of neurophysiological conditions and mental workload on physical and cognitive performances: a multidimensional perspective

2023

The Research Topic "Effect of Neurophysiological Conditions and Mental Workload on Physical and Cognitive Performances: a Multidimensional Perspective" compiles recent advances in the multidimensional assessment of the effect of neurophysiological status and mental workload on physical and cognitive performance (Aghajani et al., 2017; Perpetuini et al., 2022). Due to technological and data analytics tool advancements, non-invasive and real-time monitoring of the activity of the human central and autonomic nervous systems is now possible, facilitating the quantification of the relationship between physiology and human performance (Ashkanasy, 2004; Cardone et al., 2022). Moreover, questionnai…

A clinical staging model for bipolar disorder: longitudinal approach

2020

AbstractBipolar disorder (BD) has been identified as a life-course illness with different clinical manifestations from an at-risk to a late stage, supporting the assumption that it would benefit from a staging model. In a previous study, we used a clustering approach to stratify 224 patients with a diagnosis of BD into five clusters based on clinical characteristics, functioning, cognition, general health, and health-related quality of life. This study was design to test the construct validity of our previously developed k-means clustering model and to confirm its longitudinal validity over a span of 3 years. Of the 224 patients included at baseline who were used to develop our model, 129 (…

A Mindfulness-Based Program Improves Health in Caregivers of People with Autism Spectrum Disorder: a Pilot Study

2014

Mindfulness-based interventions have demonstrated to be effective in reducing stress and health complaints in clinical populations. However, to our knowledge, biological health markers have not been used in studies of the effectiveness of mindfulness programs in caregivers of people with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). This study aimed to assess the effects of a mindfulness intervention on mood disturbances and health complaints in this population compared with non-caregivers. The design of the study was quasi-experimental, with repeated measures. Self-reported health, cortisol awakening response (CAR), and afternoon cortisol levels before and after a mindfulness session were assessed at …

Resilience and prosocial behaviour in Spanish care professionals of dependent persons

2022

Professional residential care providers face several stressors due to the burden of caring for dependent people. This burden may affect the way in which care is carried out. Resilience, as personal strengths, may help them to be more effective in their workplace and in their interaction with patients, and this may be related to the development of participation skills and prosocial behaviours. A total of 125 professional's caregivers from Spain responded to the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale Resilience Scale and the PB new Prosocial Conduct Scale over the years 2018 and 2019. We checked the predictive power of resilience as well as other predictors (sex, type of contract and total months w…

Person-Centred Care approach by professional caregivers in the population with mental illness: systematic review

2022

The model of Person-Centred Care has as fundamental principles the emphasis on the person within its context, individualized attention and empowerment. However, studies about this approach on mental illness are scarce. The aim of this work is to carry out a systematic review of articles studying the approach of Person-Centered Care provided by professional caregivers in people with mental illness. To this end, a systematic review according to PRISMA guidelines was carried out of articles found in the Web of Science (WoS), PubMed, ScienceDirect and Dialnet databases. Following the analysis of the 19 articles, the results show that both users and professionals perceive that Person-Centered Ca…

Differences in false recollection according to the cognitive reserve of healthy older people

2016

We present an associative recognition experiment comparing three samples of healthy people (young people, older people with high cognitive reserve [HCR], and older people with low cognitive reserve [LCR], with each sample consisting of 40 people), manipulating stimuli repetition during the study phase. The results show significant differences among the three samples in their overall performance. However, these differences are not due to a different use of familiarity, but rather due to a different way of using recollection: although there are no differences in the hit rates between the HRC and LRC samples, the LCR group makes significantly more recollective false alarms than the HCR group. …
